GrandStay Suites Partners with USSC-S

March 2010 – The GrandStay Residential Suites has joined the growing list of corporate sponsors dedicated to making Sheboygan and the US Sailing Center - Sheboygan the premier destination for world class sailing! Thanks to a very generous donation, USSC-S will be able to provide needed housing within walking of the waterfront to sailing and regatta officials throughout the 2010 racing season. According to Kathy Lindgren, USSC-S event coordinator, this type of donation will allow us to continue to provide a fantastic experience to those travelling to Sheboygan while still keeping the cost of all our events low.

MCSA 2009 Match Racing Regatta and Clinic

October 2009 – On October 16th, seven college sailing teams traveled to Sheboygan, Wisconsin to participate the first Midwest Collegiate Sailing Association Invitational match racing clinic and regatta.  The event was hosted by the U.S. Sailing Center-Sheboygan.

Northwestern University’s Tod Reynolds and crew, Nick Campbell and Geoff Pedrick, beat out Christine Porter from the University of Wisconsin in the finals to take top honors.  Crewing for Porter were Patrick McMinn and Jeremy McMahon.  The final round featured extremely close racing with Northwestern taking an early lead with 2 wins, but Wisconsin battled back to win the next 2 matches.  Tied 2-2, it came down to who would win the last race.  Northwestern won the start and kept the lead throughout to win the regatta.

The University of Minnesota’s Matt Thompson, Branden Solum, Nick Hovland, and Eric Tobias defeated Ohio State 2-1 to claim third place.

Teams from St. Thomas University, Miami of Ohio, and University of Illinois completed a double round robin to decide positions 5, 6, and 7.

Sheboygan PRO, Rich Reichelsdorfer and International Umpire Don Becker oversaw the 45 races over two days in winds ranging from 8 to 16 knots.

US Sailing Center-Sheboygan 2010 Racing Season

October 2009 – U.S. Sailing Center-Sheboygan has announced its 2010 racing season.  Running from May through October, the season includes match, team, and fleet racing opportunities for all levels of competitor.  The season will also feature open, youth, and advanced racing clinics and the US Sailing Center-Sheboygan’s premier event, The Buddy Melges Challenge.  For our complete schedule and further details see our Upcoming Events.

Buddy Melges Challenge Awarded ISAF Grade 1

October 2009 - US Sailing Center-Sheboygan has been awarded a Grade 1 Women's Match Race event in 2010! The Buddy Melges Challenge will be sailed September 9th through 12th in the Olympic class match race boats, the Elliott 6m.  Sheboygan's Buddy Melges Challenge adds only the third women's Grade 1 racing opportunity in the US for the world's top women match race sailors to come together for elite-level competition.

Kohler Receives US SAILING's Highest Honor

October 2009 – US SAILING has awarded its prestigious Nathanael G. Herreshoff Trophy to Terry Kohler for his outstanding contributions to the sport of sailing in the U.S. over many years. Mr. Kohler has been active in the Women’s International Match Racing Association (WIMRA). He played in intricate role in a successful international campaign to get women’s match racing into the 2012 Olympics and has been key to the creation and success of US Sailing Center-Sheboygan.

Kathy Lindgren - US Certified Umpire

November 2009 – US Sailing Center - Sheboygan is pleased to announce, Kathy Lindgren has been certified by US Sailing as a National Umpire. After years of study and practice, Kathy was notified by the US Umpire Committee during the October US Sailing Meeting in Texas that her application for National Umpire status was approved. This fantastic accomplishment makes Kathy the only certified umpire in Wisconsin and only the second in all of Area K.

Snowbirds of a Different Kind

November 2009 – Elliott 6m boats from the US Sailing Center of Sheboygan all dressed out with travel covers have been loaded on trailers for transport to Florida. The boats will be available for charter and will be raced during US Sailing Team Alpha Graphics qualifiers and the ISAF Grade 1 OCR before coming home for the 2010 season.

USSC Sheboygan Mobile Headquarters

November 2009 – Rich Reichelsdorfer left Sheboygan Saturday, November 21st with a newly purchased trailer packed with Elliott 6m masts, sails and spare parts. Final destination – Miami, Florida where the boats will be rigged and tuned for sailing at their winter home.

Manitowoc Marina Teams With USSCS

November 2009 – Manitowoc Marina has teamed up with US Sailing Center - Sheboygan to help bring the best competitive sailing in the world to the midwest. In a very generous offer, Manitowoc Marina is providing low cost maintanence to USSCS's fleet of sailboats and support vessels. According to Rich Reichelsdorfer, executive director of the sailing center, "Competition at this level can really take a toll on the boats, but thanks to Manitowoc Marina's professional service, all of our boats will be as good as new for the 2010 season."

Advanced Youth Match Racing Camp & Regatta

December 2009 – US Sailing Center-Sheboygan is thrilled to announce that the winner of the 2010 Advanced Youth Match Racing Camp & Regatta will be awarded an invitation to the Governor's Cup International Junior Match Racing Championship being sailed at Newport Harbor Yacht Club.

2010 Season Schedule Change

December 2009 – Due to a scheduling conflict, U.S. Sailing Center-Sheboygan has announced a minor change to its 2010 racing season. The Advanced Open Clinic & Regatta with AlphaGraphics Olympic Team Coach Dave Perry has been rescheduled for June 16-20. For the complete 2010 schedule see our Upcoming Events.

Sonar Training Camp

December 2009 – US Sailing Center-Sheboygan has added a SONAR training camp to its 2010 season. Scheduled from September 13th to the 17th, this informal event is the ideal opportunity to sharpen your boat handling skills or to warm-up for the ISAF Women’s World Match Racing Championship in Newport, RI. Mark your calendars. More details will be coming soon.

USSTAG January Qualifier

January 2010 – The US Sailing Center – Sheboygan’s 2010 season kicked off with the US Sailing Team-Alphagraphics (USSTAG) January Qualifier in Key Biscayne, Florida. Seven of the best women’s sailing teams in the country faced off in the most extreme racing conditions. On the line was nothing less than the opportunity to compete in the ISAF Sailing World Cup and a slot on the US Sailing Team.

With temperatures in the 40’s and 50’s, rain, sleet, and steady winds from 16 to 26 knots, weather conditions in southern Florida were reminiscent of Sheboygan or Weymouth, England, site of the 2012 Olympics. These challenging conditions brought out the best in the race committee, umpires, and competitors. In addition, the new Olympic class Elliott 6m sailboats proved extremely agile and fast with downwind speeds exceeding 16 knots.

MCSA Match Racing Championship

February 2010– The US Sailing Center – Sheboygan in cooperation with the Midwest Collegiate Sailing Association (MCSA) has finalized the dates for the 2010 MCSA Match Racing Championship. The best college sailing teams in the midwest will be coming to Sheboygan on October 2nd and 3rd to compete. Watch this site for more details.
